MSI WindPad Tablet

It's a bit odd to see a gadget go from sitting in your hand to sitting in the output file of some renderer but, if images uncovered by blogeee.net are as legit as they're said to be, MSI looks to be thinking a redesign for its upcoming WindPad tablet. Two different versions are shown, one with a chromed bezel that's not entirely unlike the one we played with previously, and another with what looks to be edges that are not convex but instead concave, which actually seems like it could be quite nice for carrying whilst sauntering about the penthouse. On the back is a raised black surface that surely can't be glass... right? Anyhow, there's no being sure of the legitimacy of these renders, but both look respectable enough to show up on this tablet whenever it shows up at retail, supposedly by the end of the year.

This phone is unique not because Samsung builds it, but because Bang & Olufsen has designed it. If you take a look at the phone it's a completely unique design: that the screen is intended to be the bottom of the phone with the keypad representing the top half. Why flip the screen? Because by placing the screen on the bottom the user no longer places his or her ear onto the screen causing it to become greasy. Bang and Olufsen's minimalism is present throughout the design. There is no screen on the outside, the keypad is circular like b&o remote, and the ring tones are noticeable yet unobtrusive pings which make the phone all the more elegant. The Serene's unique design comes in a small package. The price? €1100

Alarm Clock Pillow
This concept combines the best part of sleeping, your pillow, with the worst part of sleeping, your alarm clock. You pull the tab to set the alarm and when the time is right, the entire pillow vibrates to wake you up.

I don't know, though I love the two birds one stone idea, I kind of want to wake up pleasantly, to like nature noises, not in panic thinking there's an earthquake. Maybe we can find other uses for vibration pillows. [Yanko Design]

SMARTPHONE users will finally get a proper alternative to Apple's iPhone this week.

Microsoft is set to take the wraps off its new mobile platform Windows Mobile 7 tomorrow, with journalists around the world invited to synchronised press conferences.

It's likely that several new phones running the platform will be revealed as well.

The launch will be a breath of fresh air for anyone who thinks the smartphone market has become a bit samey since the success of the iPhone.Unlike Google's mobile platform Android, Windows Phone 7 looks nothing at all like the market leader.

Android smartphones sometimes feel like open-source replicas of the iPhone, with an interface that's just a little too familiar.

Windows Phone 7 has a drastically different feel to it. It's as smooth and simple as an Apple product, but original enough to feel like something new.

One of the major differences is the home screen. Instead of a grid of apps, it's made out of "live tiles" that update dynamically as the content behind them — like email or Facebook — changes.

"The overwhelming feeling you get is that it pushes the mobile (interface) to a new level," said APCmag.com after a demonstration.

But even if the new platform takes off, Microsoft will have to play catch-up when it comes to content.

The software giant will not only have to convince developers to start making apps for its platform, but try to match the hundreds of thousands already available for its rivals.

Apple currently boasts more than 250,000 apps in its App Store. There are about 70,000 for Android phones.

As part of the Windows Phone 7 launch, Microsoft has retired its existing app marketplace for previous phone platforms.

Apps for the new platform will be available through the forthcoming Windows Phone Marketplace.

BlackBerry Tablet

Today at Research In Motion's annual BlackBerry Developer Conference, CEO Mike Lazaridis announced the company's new tablet -- the PlayBook. The tablet will utilize an OS created by the recently acquired QNX (just as we'd heard previous to the announcement) called the BlackBerry Tablet OS which will offer full OpenGL and POSIX support alongside web standards such as HTML5 (which is all tied into RIM's new WebWorks SDK). Lazaridis was joined on stage by the company's founder, Dan Dodge, who said that "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before," and added that the PlayBook would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players." RIM also touted the PlayBook's ability to handle Flash content via Flash 10.1, as well as Adobe AIR apps.

The new slate -- which Lazaridis described as "the first professional tablet" -- will sport a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU (the company calls it the "fastest tablet ever"), 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens (and yes, there will be video conferencing). There was no mention of onboard storage capacity during the keynote, though the devices we just spied in our eyes-on post are labeled 16GB and 32GB on their back panels. The PlayBook will be capable of 1080p HD video, and comes equipped with an HDMI port as well as a microUSB jack, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. The device clocks in at a svelte 5.1- by 7.6-inches, is only 0.4-inches thick, and weighs just 400g (or about 0.9 pounds).

In terms of interface, the OS looks like a mashup of webOS and the BlackBerry OS, even allowing for multitasking via what amounts to a "card" view. Interestingly, RIM and QNX boasted of the PlayBook's multimedia and gaming functions, but Mike Lazaridis also described the tablet as "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry." That's due largely in part to a function of the tablet which allows you to siphon data off of your BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth tethering and display it on your PlayBook (a la the ill-fated Palm Foleo).

While the PlayBook doesn't seem to rely on phone content alone, the press release from the company says that users can "use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data." RIM didn't hand out any solid launch dates beyond "early 2011," and of course, there was no mention of retail price. We've got a slew of content after the break, including the PlayBook spec rundown, the company's press release, and a full video of the device (and UI) in action -- so take a look!

The new iPod Touch received an official release date, which will start shipping next week and pre-orders are accepted right away. The new iPod Touch 4G will come equipped with the iPhone 4′s Retina Display, Apple A4 core, a 3-axis giroscope, Game Center, FaceTime. The best thing in the new iPod Touch has a frontal camera included and FaceTime installed, which means that its users can create video conferences. Another great thing about the Apple’s ’device without phone’ is that it has a rear camera which provides support for HD video.

Apple released info about the pricing of all the iPod’s Touch 4G models. See below the prices of all iPod Touch models :

  • iPod Touch 4G with 8GB of storage space is available at a price of $229
  • iPod Touch 4G with 32GB of storage space is available at a price of $299
  • ipod Touch 4G with 64GB of storage space is available at a price of $399
Only these 3 models will be released by Apple, this means that the 16GB and the 128GB editions of iPod Touch 4G were left out and we need to wait for the next generation of iPod Touch to be released with a larger storage space.

Nokia N-8, N-SeriesIn a bid to catch up with the lost time in touchscreen smart phones, Nokia will soon launch its latest N-series mobile phone N8.

By the end of September 2010, it will launch N8 globally, including India. To be priced at around $470 (Rs 22,500) plus taxes, Nokia N8 is a touchphone with many new innovative features.

The 3G and HSDPA enabled phone with 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen has an excellent high resolution screen for sharp visual effect. It is fitted with 12 mega pixel camera and can shoot video in HD Ready (720p) format. But the most important feature, which the company claims a first in any mobile phone, is the HDMI port in the phone which can be used to play a high definition video clip or full length movie from the phone’s storage memory through a television screen with surround sound.

In a pre-launch product demo to Deccan Herald at Nokia’s Research Centre in Bangalore, Head of Solution Marketing, Mobile Computing Zairus Master demonstrated this excellent quality of N8.

Another first-time feature, Nokia calls it ‘USB on the Go’, is the ability of the device to recognise flash-based mass memory device (or pen drive) and to read and write from it. In simple terms it means that an user can connect his pen drive with N8, listen to music or watch a movie from it either on the phone’s screen or on a TV screen. It also allows one to dump data files from the phone to pen drive.

This feature will allow an user to carry and play thousands of music files, hundreds of video files and games in a USB drive and play it through his mobile, whenever and where ever he wants,” Master said. With an internal memory of 16 GB and expandable memory of 48 GB, the phone itself can store a huge number of data file.

As N8 runs on Symbian3 operating system with an ARM11 680 MHz processor and 3D Graphics HW accelerator, the phone’s touch screen functions work really fast. It also allows the user to setup 3 home screens that can be configured easily depending on the usage for work, entertainment and social networking. Nokia claimed that N8 runs on a sealed Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery that has a stand-by time of up to 390 hours, talk time of up to 12 hours and music play time up to 50 hours.
